Ever you asked this question to yourself?
A person on Quora asked the same question.
So, is it possible for a lion to survive on just fruits and nuts?
The answer is NO!.
There is a term used for cats, Obligate Carnivores. Obligate carnivores are "true" carnivores animals whose survival depends on nutrients which are found only in animal flesh. They get everything they need from animal organs, meat and bones, shortage of which results in many diseases including heart failure and permanent blindness.
One other major reason is the type of protein they get from animals. Plants protein is different from animal proteins and cats are not good in utilizing the same.
Humans and dogs also requires animals proteins, but if there is a shortage they can make there own animals proteins but cats cannot.
So, it will take a lot of evolution for your dream of having a cat if you and your family are pure vegetarians.
BONUS:
White obligate carnivores might be able to ingest small amounts of plants material, as because of their evolution they lack the necessary physiology required to digest that plants material. But you certainly didn't like one in your own house. :D
